Jellycat Myrtle Hippopotamus arrives as a grey animal, 37 cm from base to ear tip, soft the whole way through.

What it is like to hold

The proportions are doing the work here. Slightly heavier through the base than the head, so Myrtle Hippopotamus sits rather than topples, in a colourway of grey that stays readable in a nursery with the lights low.

Size and fit

The measurement is 37 cm. Worth knowing to the centimetre rather than roughly, because our outfits are listed by the height they are cut for and a few centimetres is the difference between a dress that closes and one that does not. Measure base to head, and the size guide will tell you the rest.

The collection it belongs to

This one comes from the Jellycat Characters range. Jellycat design in ranges rather than one piece at a time, and it shows: the proportions, the face and the finish carry across, which is why collectors tend to buy two or three from the same family rather than one from each. Our own outfits are cut to centimetre bands for the same reason, so a piece bought a year later still has something in the wardrobe that fits it.

Made from, and looking after it

Polyester fabric with polyester filling. Hand wash only. Do not tumble dry. Left to dry naturally it keeps its shape, and the stitched features come through a wash unchanged, which is the advantage of embroidery over anything printed or glued.

Suitability

It is as fitting for a birthday as for no particular occasion at all. It is also one of the safer choices when you do not know the room it is going into, because it does not insist on a colour scheme.
