Every plush on this site is listed with one figure: its height in centimetres, measured as the toy sits. That single number tells you whether a companion will perch on a shelf, fill a cot or disappear into a school bag, and it is the number to compare when you are choosing between two sizes of the same character.
How a plush is measured
A plush is measured from the base it rests on to the top of its head. Ears, antlers, horns and tails are not counted, which is why a bunny listed at 31 cm can look taller than a bear of the same figure once its ears are standing up. Jellycat publishes its measurements the same way, so the number on our listing is the number on the swing tag.
Depth and width are not listed, for a plain reason: a soft toy has no fixed depth. It squashes into a bag and fills out again on a shelf, so a second figure would be a guess dressed as data. Where a piece is much wider than it is tall, a laid-out crocodile or a stretched-out cat, the listing says so in its description.
The size bands in this shop
The catalogue currently holds 56 distinct heights, from 5 cm to 108 cm. They group into five bands, and the count beside each one is what was in stock when this page was last built.
| Band | Height | Pieces | What it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiny | 1 to 14 cm | 145 | Bag charms, keyring companions and the smallest soothers. These sit in a hand and travel in a pocket. |
| Small | 15 to 22 cm | 225 | The size most often bought as a first plush or as a gift that has to fit in a bag. Our handmade outfits are cut for this band. |
| Medium | 23 to 32 cm | 200 | A shelf and cot favourite, tall enough to sit up on its own without taking a whole bed. |
| Large | 33 to 49 cm | 75 | A plush to be carried rather than pocketed. These read as a present on their own. |
| Huge | 50 cm and above | 44 | Statement pieces. A 66 cm dragon is close to the length of a cot, so measure the space before choosing one. |
Choosing a size for someone else
For a newborn or a nursery
Small and medium pieces, 15 to 32 cm, are the usual choice. They sit in a cot without crowding it and they are light enough for a small child to carry about. Anything suitable from birth carries that line in its own description, and we do not add the phrase to a piece that never had it.
As a gift that has to travel
Under 22 cm fits a handbag, a suitcase corner or a Christmas stocking. Bag charms sit under 14 cm and come with a clip, so they attach to a rucksack rather than being carried.
For a collector
Collectors tend to look for the largest release of a character, which is usually 50 cm or more. Where a character exists in several heights we list them as sizes on one product, so the choice is made in the dropdown rather than by hunting for a second listing.
When a character comes in more than one size
Choose the height in the dropdown on the product page and the price updates with it. The sizes shown are the ones we hold: a height that is not listed is one we do not stock rather than one we have hidden. Additional Information on the same page repeats the figure, and the description gives it in words as well, so it can be read without opening a menu.
Plush sizes and outfit sizes are different questions
This page is about how big a soft toy is. If you are choosing one of our handmade outfits to fit a plush you already own, that is the other question and it has its own guide with the fit range for each garment size: see the outfit size guide. The short version is that you measure your own plush the way described above, then match that figure to the garment.
Questions we are asked most
Is the height taken with or without the ears?
Without. The figure is measured to the top of the head.
Why do two plush of the same height look like different sizes?
Filling and shape. A rounded amuseable at 20 cm holds far more volume than a slim bunny at the same height, so it reads as the larger of the two on a shelf.
Do you list the weight?
No. Weight varies with the filling batch and it is not something we measure ourselves, so we do not publish it.
